Territory WAR

""Sure wish we had some grenades""

submission: Territory WAR
date: March 22, 2006

Very good, been a waiting for a decent Worms clone to hit Newgrounds. I played the whole thing through, all 11 missions. Bit easy, I only lost once because of a bug and completed L10 with all 6 characters alive. Loved how you could name the characters, I went for the crew of Serenity, with Jayne kicking the most ass.

The best thing here was probably the arenas. Good variety, the characters interacted with them well, and they looked good. I kind of wish you hadn't used sticks, they just look so tacky, it wouldn't have taken too long to make some better looking characters (maybe even with a customization mode, other than just choosing a hat).

It played mostly smoothly. I hit one bug when an enemy threw a grenade upwards into a platform, it sort of stuck spinning and I had to restart. You could avoid this by adding a timeout to the grenades so they blow if they remain static for too long.

Sound gets a 6 because although I can't really complain about the music (not my taste, but at least there was an off button), the SFX were a bit weak. The bodies didn't make much sound when bouncing around. And you should add speech Hogs of War style, just some funny lines that the characters say after attacking.

In a way this reminds me of Kitty Cannon style games, because the majority of the game was just about throwing grenades well. Shooting and booting just felt like extras. Its probably already been said loads but this majorly needs more weapons. I can think of at least 20 that would work great, and most of those really wouldn't take too long to script. If you do make a sequel, it'd also be cool to add vehicles like tanks.

Another thing that would make this that little bit better would be destuctable scenery. I know how hard it is to make, I wouldn't have a clue where to start, but it is possible as games like Serious Santa prove. If you could find out how to do it it'd make the game so much better.

As it is this is a great game, I had loads of fun playing it. But there still feels like loads of room for improvement. I really hope you make a sequel because with a lot of work it could be the best thing to hit ever Newgrounds.

I think you've just got my record for my longest review ever ^_^. Great work, 5/5.

Author's Response:

Heh, thanks for the response. The grenades should have a timeout now, not sure why they did that :(

I learned how to do destructible scenery about half-way through making the game, so if I do a sequel that will be up there on the list.

"Something different"

date: March 16, 2006

Great to see something this different on the portal. I enjoyed it a lot.

Things I loved-

-The style. Very original, very effective- some of the best game graphics I've seen (although I knocked 1 off because a few bits verge to close towards simple rather than stylish).

-The menu. Fantastic- its inspired me for my future games.

-Running up walls! At first I ws unimpressed at the engine, it seemed to be standard platform material. But then when I ran up a wall, I realized how advanced it is. I wouldn't know where to start coding in a feature like that.

-The open play style. So much to explore, even though the game is short I could spend forever on it. If forever is a few hours.

What I didn't like so much:

-After my first play I went to play again and just got stuck in a loop of death. Disappointing.

-The controls. Why can't UP be jump and down open doors?? Then I could play with one hand and drink a Lucozade with the other.

-A cookie saving option is vital for a game like this. As is a right-click menu. I'm really gonna have to make a tut with some of this stuff in, people never bother!

I've got too many problems with this to finally say 'deserved of no.1 submission', but it comes closer than most. Bring on a sequel.

Another Quiz In The Wall

"Interesting"

date: March 16, 2006

I enjoyed this. If there is a greatest band, it can only be Pink Floyd. I completed this after a few attempts. The no. of top 20 singles question got me, I'm surprised they've only had 4, they definitely had a few others that deserved top 20 (Wish You Were Here for example, my fave of their singles).

This'd be better if you didnt have to restart after getting 1 wrong, you should just get a score out of 10 at the end. If it was like that, I think I'd have got 7.

Hope this survives cause any other Floyd fans here should enjoy it like I did. Nice work.

"Unoriginal but cool"

date: March 14, 2006

Pretty much the same mix of shooting and more shooting that we've seen many times before. But this was very good. I think it works so well because there's always so much going on, it requires full concentration and ultimately its pretty good fun.

The one thing that could be a better is the controls. So we're supposed to move with the arrows, shoot with various letter keys and move the mouse to destroy objects? Afraid I only have 2 hands, not 3. I suggest either cutting out mouse movement or cutting down the keyboard keys used so that they are managable with one hand.

Otherwise it's a well made game and should do very well here at Newgrounds. Nice work ;)

"Nice"

Only got a second but I thought I should leave a review seeing as you used The Offspring. Great synch with the music, pretty funny in parts too.

I only mark this down 1 cause I preferred the 'No Brakes' movie someone did a while back. That one slayed me.

Nice work though.

"Same old"

date: March 9, 2006

Th plus side:

Some bits were funny. It had some decent jokes unlike a few of your recent ones, and it looked good.

The down side:

Exact same graphics as Tech Support 2, hence the 0. Little effort actually went into this, just a bit of lip-synching and script writing.

I'm still waiting for a movie that fills up the huge hole in your reputation your recent stuff has made. This just makes the hole bigger.

Metal Gear Awesome

"Unexpected"

submission: Metal Gear Awesome
date: March 4, 2006

When I first loaded this up, I thought it must be April Fools day. Numagrounds didn't fool anyone last year, so Toms new idea was to rig a substandard submission to get Number 1 submission of all time.

But no, its not April Fools day, this has seemingly been genuinely voted no.1. How?? I've seen graphics like this in submissions that have been blammed. No they're not terrible, they're just standard. But nothing compared to movies such as Littlefoot or There She Is, by genious artists who spend hours on every few seconds of animation.

I can't knock the humour here, it's as witty as any movie. But a lot of it only really makes sense to a Metal Gear fan. I've played the games so I get it, but a lot of people won't.

It's a good submission, worthy of a respectable 7/10. But in that no.1 spot its setting a bad example to Newgrounds, I hope it doesn't stay there long. Enjoy it while it lasts.

Once again you've taken a fairly simple concept and used great graphics, sound and style to turn it into a great game. Nice work.

"Another great platformer"

submission: Freaky Fun
date: March 3, 2006

Wow, tough crowd for this one.

I thought it was excellent. I get bored very quickly, but I played (and enjoyed) this right till the end. The gameplay was simple but varied enough, and ran exceptionally smoothly.

Your graphics are fantastic, I love how you drew the freaks, some great designs. I especially liked the floaty thing with two heads and the big walking one.

I can't really think of any negative points, so this gets a straight 10. Nice work.

Broken Sword C.A.I Pt 3

"Broken Sword- One of the greatest games ever"

date: February 28, 2006

I love Broken Sword, really great to find this in the portal. You captured the game quite well, I like the small things such as the choice of topics in speaking and the inventory.

I thought the graphics were actually very good. People don't appreciate how hard it is to draw a game like this. You did a good job.

The puzzles were quite clever. The only thing I didnt like was how you had to restart when you die. I know this was in Broken Sword, but at least that had saving. Redoing puzzles- not fun.

Overall, an excellent game. But hopefully Angel of Death will be at least a bit better :)
