TooF - Bad Habit

"TooF + The Offspring = A hell of a great Flash"

submission: TooF - Bad Habit
date: October 2, 2006

Can't believe I missed this one! Just browsing the TooF collection and noticed it. The Offspring were the first band I really really liked, and now they team up with my fave NG series ; )

Don't usually review like this, but the categorized method seems fitting here:

Graphics: 9. They're good, but unarguably improvable. I'd feel I'd be cheating the NG masterpieces (like the YuYu) to go 10. But for the purpose of this movie, really good.

Style: 10. Fitting and instantly recognizable.

Sound: 10, cause it's the offspring! Not much effort put into the sound here, but it's the offspring!

Violence: 10, Check.

Interactivity: 0. Disappointed that there's none of the bonuses of the usual TooFs, I enjoy them as much of the movie. But hey, its the movie itself that matters.

Humor: 10. Had to go 10 here cause the concept still slays me, even if it had grown a bit old now. Not many LOL moments here, but a few mildly amusing bits.

A 10 overall cause TooF is one of the greatest things to hit NG, I've been going 9 on some of your series submissions recently because they are starting to get repetitive, but this is something different which is great. Can't wait for TooF X!

To reviewer below, it was The Offspring from the album Smash (should be credited with the submission btw).

"A great movie"

submission: -=Noir=-
date: September 27, 2006

I don't often catch good stuff under judgement. Probably because I always go for the small file sizes so I don't have to wait around for loading. But the title of this one caught my eye, so I gave it a go. And I'm glad I did, it was great!

Style is a clear 10 here, it looks fantastic. Has a very unique look about it. I knocked 1 of graphics for one weak scene (the first shot of the city) but on the whole it was very very good.

Sound was excellent too. The music was well chosen and created some good tension.

I was a little disappointed at the end, I didn't mind the slow moving pace of the movie as it felt like build up, but it never really reached a climax.

The storytelling was brilliant though, I was always interested in what was going on, even a few shock moments in there.

And a first submission too! Very impressive. 9/10.

Take A Bow

"Stunning"

submission: Take A Bow
date: September 23, 2006

That was really, really good. Take a Bow is a powerful song, my fave bit of Black Holes next to Knights of Cydonia. This video was very fitting and complemented the song perfectly.

I think that, much like the song, this video gets better as it goes on. Not a bad thing, but it may have dropped your score if people got bored and stopped watching near the start. So if you think this should have scored higher (I certainly do) maybe that's where you went wrong.

Otherwise it's hard to put down. The graphics and animation is superb, I was especially impressed by the rocket sliding through the town. It's well paced too, whenever it gets slow it isn't too long before something surprising.

No question that this is a 10/10, brilliant. You'll be on my monthly top 10 for sure!

EggRun 2

"Nice game, major bug though"

submission: EggRun 2
date: September 21, 2006

I was enjoying this unil about level 4 when I went right through the wall on the right and couldn't reset. I know that bugs like these can be hard to avoid, but you should ALWAYS have some kind of reset button just in case.

Seeing as I didn't get very far I can't comment much on variety, but up the point i reached it was already starting to feel repetitive.

Still, good simple idea, nice physics, fantasitic graphics and easy to control. I like it a lot, I'd go 9/10 if it wasn't for that bug.

Ps, to the reviewer below me, there IS a music off button in the top right!

Paint Fight

"Love the style"

submission: Paint Fight
date: September 19, 2006

Not sure what it is about this but I found it significantly more enjoyable to watch than most similar movies. Could be the smoothness of the animation or the drip effect that I've never seen before. Whatever it is, it works great, keep it up! The major problem here was the length, I think another 20s+ would have greatly helped the score. Good work though.

TooF Hacky Sackory

"A step in the right direction"

submission: TooF Hacky Sackory
date: September 12, 2006

Wasn't expecting this yet, so a nice surprise to find it today (the alpha said the 16th. And I was the only person to leave a comment for that, cookie for me).

The concept was starting to drag so it was a good move to take the teef out of the mouth and make this one a bit different. It was also good that you stuck with the same characters instead of introducing more.

Maybe it was just me but I didn't find this one as hilariously funny as some of the previous ones. Still a few laughs, but nothing that killed me. The concept itself (talking teeth) used to add humour value but it seems old now, so maybe add some more talking food like the chicken leg, that was one of my fave TooF scenes.

Also, I missed the commentry and logo replies. They gave it much more replay value and were often as funy as the movie itself. Hope they make a return for TooF X (which I think sounds better than TooF 10, but you need not take my suggestions if you have some technical reaosn. Or if you think it sucks). Another thing, have you considerred scene selection? If I rewatched this I'd like to skip to the outside scene.

With 10 being such a pinnacle number I hope you have something special planned for it. From the alpha I thought this one might get you back on Front Page, but now I think you might need just a bit more. I'll keep watching and reviewing.

Space Tag

"Could work"

submission: Space Tag
date: September 6, 2006

Not seen something like this before, it's a decent idea. I think the best thing you could do would be to add AI. Most people browse NG on their own, and will blam this because they can't play it. Some idiots will probably even complain that nothing happens, most of us expect a 1-player game.

AI wouldn't be too hard. You just need the enemy ship to constantly move towards you when it's chasing, and move away when it's escaping (both with some level of randomness, possibly variable depending on the level difficulty). It'd be easier to do if you add walls instead if screen looping.

The controls were annoying too. I didn't like how the ship had constant acceleration in one direction, yes I know it's realistic, but it'd be more satisfying to play if it decceralated over time.

Graphics were pretty good. The sound annoyed me though, that 'hehe' noise was funny at first but soon got very very annoying.

I'm forgetting the game as I write this so I'll leave it there, but it's a good premise that just needs a little more. I think this deserves a 2.3 but will probably get lower than that due to the 2-player only thing. Hope it survives though ^_^

Ginger Ball Shooter

"Cool idea, but..."

date: September 6, 2006

I like the idea, it's so sick that it could have worked. But I think it needs to be more violent, the cocks n balls really need to splat when they're shot. The sound effects could be much better too.

The game itself isn't varied enough. Point n shoots are so unoiriginal that they need something special to stand out, the concept here helped, but it still needs something more.

I wouldn't minds seeing a version 2, I reckon you could pull this off. Keep at it.

Author's Response:

Thanks!
I really hate coding, this was just a balloon shooting template I altered.
If I had the know-how, there would be different balls and dicks, different impacts, different splats and sounds.
The point system would be better..
With a scoreboard and awards..
But I don't know how.. so I just did what I could with the template.
:)

Newgrounds Hold'em

"Nice idea, but some major problems."

submission: Newgrounds Hold'em
date: September 6, 2006

At first I thought this would be a Texas Hold Em sim, and as I haven't seen a decent one done at NG I thought that would be good. But this is something I've never played before, which is even better.

First off - graphics great, sound great. The NG characters and 'other things' made it more enjoyable to play.

But major problem #1 - the concept doesn't really work. All the backgrounds could be won by placing an all-in bet on the highest odd hand (post-flop) and if it doesnt win just reset and try again. I did this on a 20-1 hand, won on 2-pairs and grabbed the Girls 2 background. In a short while I had them all.

There's a serious bug too. If you lose all your chips and forget to reset at the end of a round, you're buggered. Cause when you click deal you cant reset any more, and when the flop shows with no bets on the deal button cannot be selected. So it's a freeze situation, the game must be refereshed.

The bug can be fixed no problem (I suggest re-uploading the fla quickly) , but the first problem would require quite a big rethink. So maybe more testing was needed. Shame because this could have been great. Still, you got a good score and it's deserved, so well done.

Author's Response:

Originally I was going to leave it so that you'd have to refresh the browser to regain your credit when you run out. If you lose all your chips, it's not a bug, it's just poor playing (probably because you're betting on a 100/1 hand to try and get all the credit). In a real-life situation, if you run out of money, that's it, game over. I thought I would avoid people getting frustrated, but if I gave the reset option at any other time, people would just keep resetting on the post-flop or whatever, basically giving them an infinite amount of money to lay as a bet. That's the reason the reset is only allowed at EOG.

Basically, most people who visit NG won't go into the same depth of analysis that you have, so it'd be wasted effort if I tried to adapt it like that.

I appreciate the comments though, thanks a lot for the feedback. I'll probably be releasing more card games in the future. The problem is, providing some kind of reward when the betting isn't done with real money. I might write a mini-game or two into the next.
